15 days to go

In about fifteen days from now, my fraternity batch is about to celebrate our 5th Anniversary. What have I learned since that fateful day, 5 years ago?

1. Life takes us to places we ought to be at that particular moment.
2. We do not choose who we are, but we can certainly decide who we want to be.
3. There is a purpose and a reason behind every character flaw.
4. We can accept our fate or lose the only chance we have of changing the stars.
5. Not every one we hate eventually become our enemies.

On that day, when I kissed the sun-scorched patch of earth and prostrated myself at the feet of my brethren, I knew then how it was to be beaten at every turn. We received harsh treatment and conquered every pain with superior minds and ferocious hearts. But, we are not charlatans. We can felt pain. Tears fell from erstwhile warriors' eyes and rolled down our cheeks. Battered and bruised, we stood our ground, accepting our fate as it was then.

But it was not in fighting that we received the greatest accolade. It was when we surrendered our will to fight and humbly accepted our predicament that our fate were sealed. By losing ourselves, we have won others. By succumbing to defeat, we have raised our honor. By prostrating to our masters, we have become brothers.

No ordinary man can understand why it is called sweet pain. Only a commoner can. No other commoner can understand why the 17th day of the sixth month of 2007 is precious except the good seven of the law.

We almost died together. But we also conquered forever.
