After 3 Bar Ops, am I ready to take the Bar?

Am I ready to take the Bar?

That would sum up the questions that a would be lawyer would ask himself as he is nearing the completion of his law studies. Have I studied all the laws that covers the Bar subjects? Have I read the landmark jurisprudence of a particular provision? Have I mastered the basic doctrines of my profession? Is my handwriting legible? Do I sound legally logical enough to merit a mark in the examiners' mind?

Three years ago, I experienced my first Bar Operations. I was just fresh out of college, and I am still adjusting to the rudiments of law school life. As an inductee of TAU KAPPA PHI, we are bound by sacred duty to support the Bar Ops. As I recall, we have 23 barristers in 2007, most of whom I do not know back then. We made rounds at the offices of alumni brods for solicitations to pay for the hotel accommodation of the baristas. We rushed through the hotel floors in the late of night to provide their food and coffee requests. We scurried along the roads of Manila to go to various hotels for last minute tips and find an open photocopy center to reproduce them. We sold t-shirts and jackets to augment the finances of the fraternity, not to mention the personal cost it entailed us, for the food and the drinks at the bar site. At the site, we were serving food and drinks to the alumni brods. I even brought my own lighter and bottle opener to properly serve them. And all through this time, we are either drinking alcohol or are already drunk, with no sleep. That was the taste of my first bar ops, though I never fully understood its deeper meaning.

It was however a different story last year. I personally know four of the 26 barristers who took the 2008 Bar Exams. Although I am not the one taking the exams, I somehow feel what they feel. When they are hungry, I feel their hunger. When they are tired, I share their tiredness. When they want something to drink, I feel like drinking with them. When they are jittery, I feel tensed just the same. When they storm the heavens for answers, I feel the need to pray as well. Thus, I finally understood why we are there. We bore upon ourselves, by a solemn bounden oath to do whatever it takes, to veer them away from all the unnecessary distractions while they are taking the Bar. Participating at the Bar Ops transformed from one of duty, to one of service. What initially started as a pledge became a commitment to aid the barista in his quest to achieve the penultimate goal, an ATTY. at the beginning of one's name.

It is therefore with a clear perspective of what to expect and in no small measure, that at the beginning of the 2009 Bar Exams with 31 barristers up our sleeves, we start the drill again. With 10 inductees and all resident brods, we recited the pledge anew - SUSUPORTAHAN KO ANG BAR OPS! This year, we indeed faced a lot of difficulties. But with strong alumni support, we managed to end the Bar Operations for our barristers with a bang. A professor of mine once said, passing the Bar is the exception, flunking it is the rule. What we now do is to await the results come March 2010 and pray that our barristers proves to be the exception to the rule.

With all my palabras, the question still remains - am I ready for the Bar? I shall know it better, with two more Bar Ops (2010 and 2011) before I take it in 2012. But whilst I wait, I shall help the next set of barristers who I am 100% certain, I have personally met and been acquainted with. And all the while, I study hard and prepare for the toughest professional examination in our country. And to the present and future brods, it is my fervent hope, that they shall help me as well in my bar quest. The rest, I leave to God!

Mabuhay ang 2009 TAU KAPPAN Barristers!

Bar Exams postponed due to TS Ondoy

As of press time, heard over DZMM Radio Patrol 630, at 1645H.

Supreme Court Public Information Office Chief and Spokesperson Atty. Midas Marquez has announced the postponement of the Bar Examinations set for tomorrow, 27 September 2009, to 4 October 2009, same time at the De La Salle University.

The postponement came after the incessant rains and massive flooding caused by Tropical Storm "Ondoy." This is the first time in Philippine history that the Bar Exams were postponed. The subjects set were Remedial Law and Legal Ethics and Legal Forms.

Updated as of 28 September 2009, at the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno said that it was a logistical dilemma that caused the postponement of the Bar Exams, besides the fact that the venue is submerged in waist-deep flood water. The Supreme Court had to shell out additional funds to shoulder the expenses of re-issuing IDs and examination permits. They also had to re-negotiate the contract with De La Salle University over the use of the facilities, because the College Entrance Examinations for the university shall be conducted on the 4th of October.

2008 Bar Examinations - D-day minus 1

Tomorrow, the Bar Examinations shall begin!

For thies year's 6,533 barristers, it shall be the final test of his or her fitness to become a member of the Bar. I would just like to extend my utmost prayers and hope that my friends and brods, who shall take this year's exam, shall remember what they have studied for 4 or more years, shall express what they have in their minds accurately, briefly and concisely, and shall do all things well.

With God by their side, may His will be done!

Good luck and God speed! Aim high always!

Friday

Bar Site shall be the same!

Ang saya saya ng Bar Ops eh, napaka-KJ kasi nila!

The City Mayor of Manila DID NOT issue any Executive Order or any Memorandum Circular prohibiting the establishment of bar sites.

The Honorable Mayor merely relied on the Letter dated 29 July 2008 and duly received by the office of Atty. Garayblas on 31 July 2008, signed by Atty. Layusa and noted by Justice Tinga, REQUESTING the Mayor not to issue any permit, or if permits have been issued to revoke the same, for the construction or setting up of any booths along the SOUTHBOUND area of Taft Avenue, below the LRT Vito Cruz Station near McDonald's (the area where SEND-OFFS are usually made) and the vicinity in front of De La Salle University.

The Supreme Court also asked that the City Mayor to advise store owners and business establishments IN FRONT of DLSU (this is where the problem could lie because it generalizes the entire stretch of Taft Avenue) from allowing school organizations and fraternities to use their parking lots due to the experience in the past of partying, drinking sprees and brawls.

And lastly, the Supreme Court requested the Police to prevent AΦΩ Fraternity in conducting the "Oblation Run" which causes the females and the she-males to go gaga.

As for TKΦ, we have no problem insofar as the letter is concerned. Firstly, our bar site is located in the NORTHBOUND portion of Taft Avenue. It is not even Taft, but Estrada Street. Secondly, even though it is in front of DLSU, the bar site is not located on the parking lot of any store or business establishment because we are located on the street. And lastly, we are not the AΦΩ nor are we affected by the Oblation Run. We are TKΦ! We are decent persons and we need not show our "arms" to prove our virility, so we cannot be censored for causing females going gaga over us...hehehe...joke!

Well, let's see. We shall try to secure a permit from the City Hall. Let's just wait for the outcome.

Tuesday

Bar Ops banned!

MANILA, Philippines - Manila has banned the holding of bar operations or “bar ops" for the 2008 bar examinees this September to avoid traffic jams on Taft Avenue.

Radio reports on Wednesday said Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim’s action was prompted by the call of Supreme Court Deputy Clerk and Bar Confidant, Ma. Cristina Layusa, to the city government to stop issuing permits to bar ops organizers.

The activities have been the tradition of school organizations and fraternity groups to demonstrate their support for bar examinees. Organizers put up tents, use loud sound systems and create other forms of hoopla, including partying on the streets.

According to Layusa, these activities snarl up traffic, making it hard for both commuters and examinees to pass by the exam venue. She added that in the past bar ops, some streets along Taft Avenue have been closed to accommodate the supporters.

The report said secretary to the mayor Rafaelito Garayblas has tasked Supt. Roberto Rosales, Manila Police Director, to enforce the ban.

The Philippine Bar Examination is the national licensure exam for the admission to the practice of law. It is conducted during the four Sundays of September of yearly.

The 2008 Philippine Bar Examinations will be held at the De La Salle University on Taft Avenue, Manila, on September 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 8 a.m. to 5p.m. - GMANews.TV

Bar Operations 2008

And it is upon us.
-Anonymous

The day of reckoning calls. It bids us to march to battle, within the fortified walls of De La Salle University, to the beat of the drum lines; armed only with an armor of laws, a shield of case laws and jurisprudence, an amulet of prayers, an herb of fraternal support and a sword of sign pen with lots of reserve weapons; to overcome the final test of our resolve, the make or break moment, the time when we are allowed to pass that piece of wooden barrier that separates those who are within and those who are beyond, the railing we most affectionately call - the BAR!

And with September is just around the corner, we are again called to rally behind this year's hopefuls; in our desire that God and fate shall side with us, as it shall side with them. And with last year's miserable result, our most fervent hopes is among this batch of barristers.

To all those out there, I beseach your prayers for our barrister brothers. If you can support them, even just small prayer will do, it would really help. If you can render financial and logistical support as well, aba, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Hehehe!

Researching the Tinga Cases

There have been talks in the legal circle that Honorable Justice Dante Tinga of the Supreme Court would be the next Chairman of 2008 Bar Examinations. It has been 3 months since I started researching the cases penned by him, and I have made significant progress (I have research from August 2003 up to January 2005). I have saved copies of it on my computer, however, sad to say, I am still not yet through the research. Although I have made tremendous leaps, the deadline for the first draft of the case digest is on February 29. Haggard!!! The finals are just around the corner. This is really haggard!

Well, for the future of FEU Law, I have to make good on this job. Several friends of mine, not to mention 4 of my brods, are going to take this year’s bar exams, and their passing may depend on how well we make our study guides, pre-week notes, and the case digests. I’ll update this thread once in a while.
